DRC BEACON Early Years

Welcome to DRC BEACON Early Years

If you’re a Georgia educator, teaching students in K-3, you are in the right place! Georgia educators teaching students in grades K-3 and using the DRC BEACON Early Years tool will do so with confidence in the process of administering the component pieces and in using the results to support the design and delivery of high-quality instruction. Adopting DRC BEACON Early Years will also allow you to satisfy Georgia’s Universal Screener (HB 538) and Dyslexia (SB 48) requirements.

Introducing DRC BEACON Early Years

Administer the Online ELA/Math Tests
Before administering DRC BEACON Early Years assessments in ELA or Math please be sure to have practiced with them, using the Online Tools Training (OTT) site so they are comfortable with the testing platform and the functionality to interact with the items. Pick the DRC BEACON Georgia link, ‘Adaptive’ and grade level. On the sample test, students can practice all of the features, tools, and supports they could encounter on the Early Years assessment. As students navigate through the practice test they will have the opportunity to practice interacting with the different types of items that are like actual items they will encounter. When complete, the practice test can be restarted or exited.

You should also have completed the online modules in Georgia Learns. The PD course is titled: Using DRC BEACON Early Years for Literacy Screening. You may also administer the online ELA/Math assessments purely as a formative measure. When you are done assessing your students, remember to go to the DRC INSIGHT Portal to log on and to view and download student results in Reporting Services under ‘My Applications.’

Administer the FOLA
Before administering the FOLA assessments please be sure to have completed the online modules in Georgia Learns. This module will provide the background and steps for administering the Fluency and Oral Language Assessment (FOLA), including Phonics, Oral Reading Fluency, and Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN). These assessments are educator-administered in one-on-one settings with students in grades Kindergarten through Grade 3. All FOLA assessments are available in DRC INSIGHT. There is an online form for the student and one for the educator. If it is preferred, the student form can be downloaded below. The teacher will still need to use the online form so that the data is captured.
